Toilet training my 3 year old

In all honesty, there wasn’t much ‘training’ involved – mostly waiting for Travis’ lead, and a little bit of bribery.

We’d pretty much nailed potty training (click here to read ‘Potty Training My 3 Year Old‘) – although he’d only go on the potty at home, out of the house he was still in nappies. This is simply down to the fact that to use the potty, he likes to be completely butt naked – all of the time. This was okay, we were getting there with the toilet training. Baby steps.

Last week we took a really exciting trip to ASDA and bought Travis a toilet seat and step. (The ones in ASDA are fab! I really recommend). We got them home and all made a big fuss over the new bathroom additions and Travis sat straight on the toilet seat, ON the toilet! I really wasn’t expecting it to go this well!

By the end of the first day, he was peeing on the toilet like a pro!

We’ve also had some progress in the pants department – he was now wearing pants around the house… for short periods.

The only thing we had left to do, was to get him to wear pants and use the toilet out of the house. We knew we had to wait for his cue.

After a week of using the toilet at home, Travis asked me for a new Trackmaster (Thomas train). We agreed that the postman would bring him Trackmaster Diesel if he wore pants to nursery and used the big boy toilet there. As soon as we got home, I ordered the toy off Amazon – it’d be here the next day, the same day Travis had agreed be “a big boy” at nursery.

Well, he did it!
Travis went to nursery in his pants, taking his toilet seat with him. He used the toilet there and did AMAZINGLY well with only a couple accidents at the beginning of the day. I had Trackmaster Diesel with me when I picked him up.

Now the weekend was the real test – using the public toilets in unfamiliar places…

We were well equipped:

  • Plastic bag containing Toilet seat
  • Baby wipes
  • More than enough spare pants and trousers
  • Knowing the whereabouts of the toilets
  • Yummy snacks to use as bribery – we found that he’d hold himself (really well!) so needed a little persuading to go to the toilet whilst out… “Would you like a chocolate rice cake? Okay, toilet first!” This seems to work well for us. “We do that until you’ve had a wee” etc.

We ended up taking a trip to the local soft play and enjoyed a roast at the pub AND managed to use the toilet at both places without much fuss at all!

We’re almost a week on and I’m so relieved to say; My 3 year old is toilet trained! Hallelujah!
