Brace yourselves, my makeup bag is a bit like Mary Poppins handbag…
Makeup is a very recently rekindled love of mine. I used to wear a lot as a teen and a little before I had children but since becoming a mum, a “full face” of makeup for me was remembering to apply my mascara.
Fast forward to… around 6 months ago when I decided it was time to put in a little more effort and take some time back for myself. I came to the conclusion that if I was going to wear makeup, and enjoy wearing makeup, I’d have to spend a bit of money and get myself the ‘decent’ stuff.
Since spending a good amount on new makeup and learning how to apply it properly, it’s fair to say that I’ve become quite makeup-obsessed.
I’ve since become a Beauty Box Monthly Subscriber. Not to one, but three different beauty box subscriptions – which are awesome btw. A lot of the products found in my makeup bag and featured in this post came from these boxes.
Enough of the backstory, let’s get on with… What’s in my Makeup Bag?
FYI, the contents of my makeup bag are changing constantly but here’s what’s in it right now.
This season has battered my skin and I’ve found the above products great for looking after and prepping my skin before applying my makeup.
The balanceme Congested Skin Serum really works! You just dab it where needed. The spots I’ve applied it too have calmed almost immediately and I’ve found that it makes most spots disappear within 24hrs. If I need to use this, I’ll apply it before anything else. This was received in one of my beauty boxes and I love it.
Next on goes the Skin Chemists London 24 Hour Aqua Repair Facial Serum. Another received in a beauty box and another that I have fallen in love with.
Once the serums are soaked in, I apply a moisturiser. I’m currently using and loving Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream because I’m old now and taking care of my wrinkles is a must. Another beauty box discovery.
Last to go on before the actual makeup; Primer. In my bag I currently have two, e.l.f. Tone Adjusting Face Primer, gifted to me by my makeup loving (and knows way more about makeup than I do) little sister and Studio 10 Makeup Mist Glow-plexion. The Elf Primer is quite silky and is also green in colour to help balance out blemishes (which I get), whereas the Studio 10 Primer is a super quick spray-on that sits much stickier and really holds makeup on all day long.
I love a light-feeling, natural-looking foundation and bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream (in shade 01 because I’m actually a ghost) is my absolute favourite. I apply this with my beauty blender.
Next on goes my Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer (in ‘fair neutral’). I apply this under my eyes and on any problem areas and then buff in using the beauty blender.
If I’m in a rush or don’t feel like wearing much makeup, I’ll opt for my bareMinerals Original Foundation instead, which is a powder and applies much quicker, with less care needed using a large brush (Spectrum Collections A01). Alternatively, I can apply this on top of my bareMinerals Complexion Rescue for a fuller coverage.
And that’s the base done! At this point I’ve lost all definition to my face so it’s time to define…
Colour and Definition:
First on, because it makes the biggest difference, is the bronzer. I use Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer, another beauty box sample that I will definitely be purchasing after it’s gone. I apply this under my cheekbones, along my jawline, along my hairline at the top of my face and also a quick dusting across my forehead, down the bridge of my nose and across my chin to give that sun-kissed look (using Spectrum Collections A05).
For a pop of colour, I love Sleek Makeup Créme to Blush Powder (in Crimson). I just apply a little to the apples of my cheeks using my fingers and then blend gently with my beauty blender. Yes, this was another beauty box product. I love Birchbox, Glossybox and LookFantastic for introducing me to so many great new products.
RMS Beauty Living Luminizor is next to go on. This little highlighter is the tits. It gives the perfect dewy, fresh finish to your skin. I apply it to my cheek bones, tip of nose and cupids bow. I’ve even swiped it across my collar bones before.
Eyes and Brows:
If I have the time, I do like a teeny bit of smokey-style eyeshadow. I have The Beauty Crop Trio Love You So Latte palette which I received in a beauty box and also an Autograph eyeshadow that is well over 10 years old but never seems to leave me. I blend these with the A08 brush and I’ll use the A13 brush to add a bit of colour under my eyes.
Eyeliner wise, again it depends if I have the time or not. Although both incredibly easy to apply, the eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner needs a little bit more concentration whilst applying then the foolproof Marcelle Waterproof Eyeliner pencil.
Brows are possibly my favourite part of my makeup application. My Bobbi Brown Perfectly Defined Long-Wear Brow Pencil (in Blonde) has permanently replaced my Anastasia Beverley Hills Brow Wiz.
I finish my brows off with Anastasia Beverley Hills Clear Brow Gel. Ya know, to keep them in place lol.
I own two NARS Matte Multiple sticks. These can be used on lips and cheeks. I have the colours Altai and Laos and love Altai in particular for a good nude-lip.
